Ohio residents occasionally spot coyotes in urban or suburban areas, but this is seldom a cause for alarm. Coyotes are highly adaptable mammals common throughout Ohio’s 88 counties. They are regularly seen within city limits. There is no need to report sightings to wildlife officials unless the animal appears hurt, sick, or habituated to humans. If you spot a coyote on your property, make sure to remove all attractants by properly securing garbage can lids and removing outside pet food to deter the coyote from returning. If a coyote remains near your home, make lots of noise by clapping, shouting, or banging pots and pans together and it will likely move on.
