as for BAIT?
I would think apples right now would be a great bait, pears too

corn is NEVER bad too, but
bait piles can be hit or miss, as they learn fast they can just come when its dark to eat at them!

I agree apples and corn are always a good choice but hit and miss. Unless you have a feeder that's set on a timer for during legal hunting hours, you never know. Then add in all the crops still in. You might try some of that sugar beet crush, heard it was pretty good.
