well they started timbering the farm I hunt on Monday, and as of today, wow, they are taking a LOT of tree's down, maybe will have like 20% of tree's left, if that
Its going to be a barren open area after they leave here, and with my out of control deer heard, many yrs I fear before things grow back up

guess this might be the closeure in me hunting here for sure now
Oh well, been getting tired of hunting any how, maybe its time to throw in the towel!

Don't think of it as throwing in the towel, think of it as retirement. Comes a point in life when it's time to slow down a bit. That's the way I look at it. By the time I spend 8 hrs sitting in an office all day and every joint in my body aching, then coming home to all the chores of cutting wood, keeping up two vehicles, house repairs, property management, and many others, I don't have time nor the energy to hunt. All of the money I saved over the years from doing most everything myself, I have no problem buying a side of beef every so often. Let the kids kill em all.

I hear you, I like beef as much as I like venison, and I can always kill a doe if I want meat, there pretty easy for me, if I want one
my biggest issue's I guess is all the work I sunk into this farm, money too
and to see the last few yrs go bad so much, due to things beyond my control, but yet sadly, the things are all , done by law breaker
I get and except there will always be things beyond control
but when you have laws that no one follows and no one enforces, that part sucks the most
I should have a gold mine of a hunting spot, if even half the folks didn't cheat like they do here
Oh well, I am getting too sore to sit up a tree any how
so, if I hunt this yr or not, will have to see what I feel like come fall of 2014
but for now, looks like I am throwing in the towel on deer hunting

Give it some time. The juices will be flowing in the fall again. A cold snap, leaves turning, no bugs, just fresh air. The old bow will be in your hands again. Mrbb, you know there's nothing like it.

Mrbb.......when was the last time you killed a deer? I've been on here for 4 hunting seasons and I can't recall you killing a deer......but that can't be right?

mrbb

I killed a 140+ inch buck last yr, posted pic's on this site too?
so?
last jan, 2013, was last deer I killed
didn't shoot one yr before that, due to didn't want to, and same as this yr I think
been loosing desire to kill em, since my dag dies
only shot the one I did last yr, due to it was wounded, had two, 22 rounds in its ass, and was limping, or I would have passed on it too
last 10 plus deer I killed at where I hunt, all have had slugs in them, or bullet holes in there ears
I have serious cheater problems there?? Thus my lack of desire to hunt any more

Well look at it this way. You always said the deer bed off of the farm. well now with the trees coming down more and more of those deer are going to stay on the farm because this timbering is habitat improvement. It may take 2-3 years but it will be dynamite. Until then the tops will provide browse and bedding for the deer. If anything it sounds like a good thing just be patient with it. Take next year off if you want but this is probably a very good thing in the long run.

The way I see it......if you don't own your own land.....then what happens to it is simply the way it goes....no use in complaining about something you have no control over.

sorry but my old brain just can't recall that mrbb....can you report a pic of that 140+ deer? I thought that it was last year that your dog died and you lost interest in hunting?? I seriously can't recall you ever killing (and posting) a deer since I've been on here 3 1/2 yrs....not saying you haven't....just saying I can't recall one.

oh and my dog died 11/10/11, a date I recall very well, and if you look back on this site I am sure there is a post about it
I have been a menebr on this site a long time, and posted many many posts about my hunts and kills over the yrs too! before you try barking, maybe do a little looking
as your the one that seems to like to make waves talking big and all, at most posts
my hunting record speaks for it self, rather well, and I try to give good advice when I can, but can also, stand up and speak loud if the replys require it IMO

yes I have tons of pictures of the buck I last killed on trail cam's (maybe like 500-600 pic's of him)and even a day or so before I killed him, haven't really shot a deer where I hunt in yrs that I didn't have pictures of it to be honest, rather rare for me not to have pic's of every buck I see there, but one or two every yr maybe!
But here you go Stonegod, just in case you think I am not telling the truth, and feel free to take a drive up here and measure the rack if you like, its on the wall next to me, mounted(do I need to show you a pic of that too ?? lol)
and again, had this deer not been wounded, I would have left it walk, as I did many many times last yr, I only shot it cause I didn't know if its wounds would only kill it or make it suffer, so ended that guessing game by killing it, I've also passed on deer this size this yr as well, but they were healthy, I have higher standards than others I am sure, but overall, lack of desire to kill them anymore adds to that, making passing a little easier I guess!

here he is alive

and one more, as for me not owning this farm, your right, but I do manage it to a point
thus my DRAMA< maybe as you call it, about loosing the timber, don't mind timber harvesting, been pushing for it here for yrs and yrs, just not on this level
the biggest draw back here is, this farm, was un able to be seen from any roads, only way to see it was on google earth, or trespassing
BUT now with such severe timber cutting, it will now be seen from the road that drives past it
as it was, un seenable from the road, and I had such terrible tresspassing issue's this new found being able to be seen from the road, will be a major issue with even more folks trespassing
the super high numbers of deer in this area, will limit what re growth will happen, the cut like they are doing is very heavy, and IMO< going too small on what there leaving, and after yrs of NO timbering, there are very very few young tree's, so this is a too severe cut, and not a good call on the managment, but like you said, not my land, not my call, doesn't mean I have to like it however!
about 2 miles away, they did a cut like this, and its been 10+ yrs now and its JUST starting to come back now, due so many mounths to feed, eating the new growth as it starts to grow
other wise I strongly believe timbering is a great thing
just here is not so great for above reasons, and not going to be a great property to hunt anymore due to it all
the fustration isn';t worth it anymore
and my desire to go else where , isn't there
I have nothing against hunting, I just don't find it fun like I once did, thus my reason for calling it quits I think!

While you are digging up pictures pull the ones up from your last trip out to South Dakota those were pretty cool. Well except the ones where you mad a deer a hood ornament.

I don't understand why you have to call him out? He's just expressing his feelings about something he put alot of work into. Maybe in time his desire to hunt will return. But if he killed a deer lately or not has little to do with it. Maybe I'm taking the question the wrong way. But why beat him up when things are not going good for him. I'm going to take him for his word, I don't need to see a pic. If I'm wrong here Stonegod, let me know.

also, if anyone wants info ona super hunt in SD, I am willing to give the info too
its about one of the best priced rifle rut hunts in the usa that I know of, and its for an either whitetail or mule deer buck, and can be hunted in the rut, can be semi guide(what I did) or fully guided
I had the guide for just 2 days, to show me where I could hunt, killed me and my buddy killed both our bucks on the third day, without the guide
we were seening 10-20 bucks a day, a solid mix of whitetails and mule deer too, like 50/50 of each in same area too, was extra nice to have a tag for either one, had one or the other showed I wanted, not an option in most places too!
Hovever most bucks were too far away even for a rifle, very open out there, and never have enough gun, can see for miles, not kidding at all, but seen many nice bucks, in range too, a great hunt, and a great value for all that was there
can add a pronghorn to the hunt, or upland game, tons of pheasants, and coyotes
and if lucky to draw a state tag, can even add a second buck to the trip if you plan it right
can be rifle or bow too!
Just pm me, if you have any interest!

Yeah time fly's these days, I do miss my trips out west, but as in life things change
my info is still good, I stay in contact with many folks out west, so if you ever want the info, just let me know
biggest cost now I guess would be gas costs to drive out Lol

Griz

Your are right mrbb on the gas cost. It cost me as much in gas as it does to rent a cabin for the week, when I go to Ohio.

mrbb
01-21-2014, 01:44 PM
I hear that, my last trip to ND I rented a cabin for 10 days for 500 bucks, and cost me1800 plus in gas out and back
and that was a few yrs ago, before these prices hit so high as now
Ohio hunts used to cost me about the same in gas, as my tag and cabin rental, lol
but never minded the cost, or were sure easier to swallow, when you came home with a good buck LOL

nomad_archer
01-22-2014, 10:06 AM
Isn't that true. When I make the 250 mile trip up to my cabin several times a year I dont look at the fuel costs as it would be a bit discouraging I am sure. But there is something about deer camp for rifle and archery that you just cant get out of your blood.
