My phone rang at 6:21 last night and the caller ID told me it was Geoff. I told my wife "He got one" before I answered the phone. I just had that feeling after three years. Sure enough he finally bagged his first deer. Congrats, buddy.
well congrats to him,
but what did he get?? a buck, a doe??

When I spoke to him last night he said his 7 or 8 year old nephew had blood above his elbows. Not sure what that meant. I'm sure SG's brother helped with the field dressing.

Thanks guys and yes griz I had to gut it.lol And even though the deer only went 45-50yds and I could see it shortly after my little bro came back and we started tracking it......he wouldn't let me simply walk up to it.lol.....I started to but he said...."where are you going"?....."find the blood trail and do it right....it'll be good practice".....so even though I could see her.....we followed ever drop of blood to her....it was a perfect double lung shot that smashed though both ribs and the arrow ended up buried in a tree 20yds pass where it went through her. I'm pooped out from processing her today....so I'll finally get to add my "first one" story to the "your first one" thread I started three years ago.....tomorrow!!lol I just wanted to take the time now and thank all the guys on here that helped and supported my looong effort to get my first deer..... seekerbp, bigholla, radicalxl, Blackbeard, buckstalker17, bowguy10 and so many other guys who nolonger come here....but a special thanks to my good buddy and deer hunting mentor...hortontotor....his help and support along with little bro's made the looooong effort/wait just that much more fun. Thanks again guys for the congrats and all the help/advice!! .....it's much appreciated!!!

Congrats again. Great story. I'm glad little bro made you follow the blood and tracker her. I do it on everyone as well. Good practice especially when you know there is a happy ending at the end of the blood trail. Congrats.

Nope....he actually left to get the front end loader and left me there with pee wee to gut it....the only help he gave was to tell me "don't cut into the intestines". My great nephew was reaching in a grabbing guts also.....he wasn't phased at all by the blood or guts and kept apologizing for interrupting my hunt.lol

Congrats on your first kill, the sweetest of them all, I remember mine many years ago, a little buck I shot from the ground with a very bulky and heavy crossbow. Enjoy it and I hope you took lots of photos.

A few is right....wish we had taken more but it was getting dark and we had to hang and clean her. I do have a few pics I took just before I took my shot.....the fact that I took the time and risk to take the pics of a deer that was just 8yds or so away....still makes little bro shake his head in bewilderment.lol I'm sure I'll hear about it again at the family thanksgiving day feast later today.lol

Oh yeah....I don't knew if I've mentioned this....but I kept the tail (boraxed it) and I'm making buckskin out of her hide.

that's cool, and that's exactly what I did with my first deer a doe also
I still have that tail and the hide
I made a old school gun rack, and used her hide as a backer for it, and used that too on it! LOl
its been almost 30 yrs now and the hair is still right solid on it too!

My hide mrbb will be buckskin....no hair will be left on.....just a soft smoked buckskin hide. Once I fleshed it I soaked it in a hard wood ash and water solution still the hair starts to "slip" (it's soaking now), then it gets wrung, let out partially dry then in to brain tanning mix of the does brain mixed with warm water....once it has a good soak I'll wring it out again...then one more soak in the brain mix.....wring it one more time then let it hang in a cool spot over night....then stretch and soften it til it's completely dry.....and then I'll smoke it until I have a nice golden color. The smoking will insure that it'll stay soft and supple even if it get wet.
sounds like you have a plan, not many foklks even know about brain tanning I think any more, gald to hear someone is still doing it
canot wait to se how it comes out for you
the one I did is stiff as a board, but wanted it that way, as its just a backer so didn't matter and I was just a kid when I did it, not having a lot of access to things

It takes a little practice and elbow grease....but the end product is well worth it. I've brain tanned alot of smaller pelts it's really pretty neat. Hey a nicely buckskin hide sells for $15-25per sqft.....I'll post a pic once it's done....or I'll have hortontotor do it....since for some reason tapatalk won't post pics for me anymore. One of the first pelts I tanned was a mink that my hybrid wolf killed....that was 20+ years ago and it's still soft and supple with no lose of any fur.
