beans and corn plot

OK started prepping this site since the ground thawed

Its a about 2.5 acres in one big section and about a 1/2 acre in a small section
whole field is just over 6 acres

will plant half now and then other half later in fall, if things go well, budget wise

this whole plot was made using my ATV, a small harrow section I took off a big gang harrow
I started turning teh ground over while it was soft after winter, and then every few weeks did it again to help keep it soft

two weks ago I sprayed it with a round up type chemical, last saturday I turned over half of it, didn't have enough time to turn over whole plot

so today I turned the whloe plot over

added some fertilizer, 200 lbs of soybean seeds and 25 lbs of round up ready corn(beans were round up ready as well)

I then turned over the plot two more times to mix the seeds and fertilizer in

then rolled it with a culti packer

in about 3-4 weeks I will respray again with round up if need be!

and then come mid Aug.
I will reseed this plot with Brassicia

also, I picked and removed about 6 trailer loads of stones out of this site too
its lots of hard work, but help make the site better
do this every time I turn it over before a planting

seems like new rocks show up every yr too!! LOL
trailer holds about a ton at a time, so the ATV gets a work out doing this and the plots, 12 yrs of doing this with this ATV too, well worth what I paid for it, its a tool of an ATV!!

well was at the farm today

as my plot is over run with weeds
so sprayed the plot down with round up
as the beans and corn are round up ready

and the beans are doing very well besides the weeds, a good 90% take on the beans, on the corn???
well it took pretty well, but the deer are hammering it, a good 80% of the corn is eaten down to about 2-3 inch level, so odds are very slim if any stalks will make an ear of corn, or even a stalk at this rate!

here is what the plot looked like today, almost looks like a lawn, as to a food plot, all but the real small plot that one is still pretty weed free, but sprayed that too to try to keep it that way

Well hopefully you can get the weeds under control. Sorry I missed this post the first time through. Looks like you put a lot of hard work into it all!!

it is a lot of work, but its good work, you get to see the hard work pay off

weeds should clear up after spraying, but even spraying takes a lot of time, I have a 40 gallon sprayer but only covers about 6 ft at a time, so thats a lot of seat time at 3 mph on a 3 acre plot

but again, you get out of it what you put in I feel!

I've always been told not to plant corn and beans unless you have atleast 3-5 acres to work with. Especially in high deer density areas. Hopefully everything works out for you

well I would tend to agree, if your goal is to make any beans, but on corn, a acre is about as small as I would go to expect any ears, but bigger is always better, as critters, not just deer love to eat growing beans and corn, for the first ft or so of growing on the plants, everything sucks them down like candy!

That is why I typically plant clover, chicory, cereal grains (rye, oats) and brassicas. Not to mention they are cheap to plant unlike corn.

as you can see I got ride of all the weeds, and well, not really any corn left, deer ate it all or so it seems!

managed to get some rain, and it did wonders for the crops, even the corn is bouncing back, but low odds on any ears amkig it, being browsed way too heavy
its still weed free since spraying, but will see now after some rain fell!

It is going to be a tough year for any kind of plots that were spring planted. I think the Aug to Sept planters will be on top this season. I gave up on my tiny plot at my place. Just not enough sun gets in to grow much. I will not plant a clover type plot again. I'm thinking turnips if I ever do try again.

I will be doing a fall planting as well, pending budget, either 3 acre's or???
I will be doing brassicia's

to be honest in shade its hard to get any good stuff to grow, pne advantage in fall plots is leaves start to fall adding some extra light, but shorter days don't help!!!!
but Brassicia's are cheap seeds, and tend to grow well if you add enought fertilizer
there pretty simple to get going too
my fall plots will be a combo of over seeding this beans and corn on a rainy day, and then adding some fertilizer too!
rain will plant them seeds as long as I keep the weeds out

and the other sights will be dead area's till fall, I will burn off the ground cover, and just a very light disc, and seed and fertilize, and then hope for rain!
I use cheap forage rape seeds for fall plots, since last few yrs, weather has been bad on takes

a 50 lb bag of seed, enough for about 10 acres is about 50 bucks for me here!
biggest cost is fertilizer

but WOW that stuff pulls deer in the cold weather, well worth a try if you can!

Great looking plot, MRBB! I tried my first plot this year (brassicia and turnips) but nothing as expansive or impressive as yours. Tough growing in my plot due to lack of rain, but it is doing a little something which I pics of the dear grazing. Best of luck with the plot and the fall hunt. KB

I planted 6 acres of corn and it seems to all be browsed and I doubt there will be many ears. I just started researching and looks like I should have put electric fence up. Did you ever do that or think about it?

ON 6 acres you should be OK< , I typically do 3 acres, and I have way too many deer, and when i say lot, I have counted a 100 no lie in fields at once!,
they will eat/browse a ton, but I still get lots of corn, corn is pretty hardy if you keep the weeds out and fertilize it right

and or, if you can add some nitrogen right before a rain to give them a boost

as for a fence
No on electric
but I do have about 70% of the field with an 8 ft deer fence put up by the state yrs back to try to help on crop damage
they jump over it like its not there!

Only way a e fence would work here I think if if i did it 3 wide or more

so many moths to feed they would take the hit to get to food due to so many and that need to eat!

good luck on your corn

it should bounce back if your soil was preped right, corn is pretty hardy, too much rain is more of a worry than browsing on a field that size in my book
